Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, among other officials died in a chopper crash on Sunday while crossing a mountainous terrain amid thick fog in Iran’s northwestern region.
Raisi was returning from an event on the border with Azerbaijan in a party of three helicopters when his helicopter crashed into pieces.
Following the mishap, a huge rescue operation was conducted later when the officials declared ‘no sign of life’ was found on the crash site. The inclement weather conditions made rescue efforts challenging.
Mohammad Mokhber will be the interim president. An emergency cabinet meeting of Iran issued a statement saying that, “with the help of God and the people, there will be no problem with managing the country.”
Meanwhile, neighbouring countries and organisations, including Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Russia, Turkey, and the European Union, have pledged to support Iran.
Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the sudden demise of Raisi. “Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
